Off-road or 4x4 insurance refers to a specialised insurance add-on, tailored to suit the needs of individuals who own off-road vehicles and use these vehicles for recreational of competitive off-road driving. 4x4 driving specifically refers to vehicles which have four wheel drive capabilities. Due to the fact that off-road driving can lead to damage to vehicles, most insurers require clients to include 4x4 insurance on their insurance policy if they intent to use their vehicle for that purpose. In most cases, insurers will have specific limitations on how the vehicles are to be used in order for the 4x4 insurance cover to apply. These can include; type of tyre to be used, acquisition of off-road driving permits and territorial limits. Additional benefits that may apply include:
- repatriation of vehicles and occupants
- cover for electrical and mechanical breakdowns
- emergency accommodation
- emergency medical assistance cover
Cover for trailers and other equipment used when off-roading may also be included.
