Auto & General was established in June, 1985 by one of South Africa’s
most successful entrepreneurs Douw Steyn. Douw returned to South Africa from the
USA in 1985 after establishing Cal-America Insurance Company. He identified the
need for a monthly car insurance policy as yearly policies were the norm at that
time. The Auto and General Insurance Company was established in order to provide
monthly policies. The company’s transactions were also paperless as call centres
and computers were used to make the administration of these policies fast and economical.
Auto & General, also commonly referred to as A&G, had FW de Klerk open its head
office building in Johannesburg in 1990. The company thrived and in 1998 Telesure
Investment Holdings Group was founded in order to provide specialised administration
for A&G and its associated companies. The company became a subsidiary/ member of
this group.
In 2005 Auto & General celebrated its 20th birthday and instituted a service charter
for its clients. The company currently has a national presence.
