Fedsure Life was founded in the 1930’s by the Barrow family and was aimed
at workers in the building industry. In 1987 the ‘Fedsure’ brand was established
and the company was listed on the JSE as Fedsure Holdings Limited. Fedsure Life
was wholly owned by Fedsure Investments Limited which in turn was wholly owned by
Fedsure Holdings.
The Fedsure Group embarked on acquisition and merger campaign in the 1990s with
the aim of becoming a comprehensive financial services group similar to Old Mutual.
The Fedsure Group expanded into the medical aid industry, asset management and financial
intermediary services while maintaining its short and long term insurance services.
The Fedsure Group then went on to acquire Norwich Holdings which included the life
insurance division Norwich Life.
Before 2001, the Fedsure Group encompassed the following companies:
Fedsure Life
Fedsure Investments
Fedsure Asset Management
Fedsure Properties
Fedsure Unit Trusts
Fedsure Healthcare
Fedsure General
Fedsure Participation Bonds
Fedsure International Limited
Fedsure Life Namibia
Safrican
NFB Finance Brokers
TMA Investments Products Services
Norwich Holdings
From 1998 through to 2001 numerous problems surfaced at Fedsure Life which led to
a declaration of zero bonuses. With the company in trouble, Investec took control
of the Fedsure Group from January 2001. This excluded Fedsure Healthcare. Fedsure
Life changed its name to Investec Employee Benefits and almost all individual policies
were handed to Capital Alliance Life to be reinsured.
Fedsure Health
Fedsure Health, also known as Fedsure medical aid, originated from Reef Medical
Aid. Fedsure took control of Reef’s scheme administrator in 1994 and rebranded it
as Fedsure Health.
Following the acquisition of Fedsure Holdings by Investec, Fedsure Health was transformed
into Fedhealth. In 2001 the administration of Fedhealth was handed over to Medscheme.
Medscheme are currently the biggest medical aid scheme administrators in South Africa.
