Mutual and Federal’s history dates back more than 178 years, when it first
opened in Cape Town as the South African Fire and Life Assurance Company. The company
was successful and saw profits for the next 64 years. The company was then bought
by London & Lancashire which was then brought under the Royal Group. From 1962 to
1970 it operated under this group after which the Royal Group merged with the SA
Mutual Fire and General insurance company. This merger resulted in the establishment
of Mutual & Federal.
Currently 13% of Mutual and Federal is owned by the general public, 74% is owned
by Old Mutual and the remaining 13% is owned by Black Empowerment partners.
Allsure is M & F’s main personal lines insurance product. Allsure is a general insurance
policy that allows the policy holder to choose which options to add. Some of the
cover options available are for cars, home contents, buildings, accident, liability
and legal.
Insurance 4 All is Mutual and Federal’s lower income entry product aimed at people
with houses valued between R18,000 and R108,000 and home contents valued between
R10,000 and R40,000. Premiums start at around R21 per month making this type of
insurance policy very attractive to lower income earners.
Mutual & Federal also offer various forms of business insurance cover. For commercial
