Established in 1930 as the New India Assurance Company Limited of Bombay,
the aim of the company was to service the insurance needs of the Indian community
of Durban. In 1972, the branch was reopened as a wholly black owned company, following
nationalization of Indian insurance companies. In 1990, the company changed their
name to New National Assurance to reflect the changing political landscape of South
Africa.
Currently, New National Assurance partners with The Munich Reinsurance Company of
Africa Limited with participation of Hannover Re, who are considered the largest
reinsurer in the world with an A- rating (The Munich Reinsurance Company of Africa
Limited).
In 2000, New National opened their business to Underwriting Managers and Administrators.
