Established in 1969, Protea Medical Aid has been involved in medical
aid schemes for over thirty years. The Trustees of the Medical Aid are mostly members
as well and therefore has a vested interest in the welfare and success of Protea
Medical Aid. Currently, they are in a financial position that exceeds the legal
requirements significantly.
As with many other medical aids, Protea Medical Aid offers “Health Rewards” in order
to encourage members to lead healthier lifestyles in the form of a range on incentives.
These benefits include: discount vouchers for a range of stores, special offers
on new products and even cash incentives.
According to the Protea Medical Aid website, the group currently offer three medical
aid plans. They are the Standard Plan, the Extended Plan and the Essential Health
Plan. The benefits for each of these plans include, but are not limited to:

• Covers hospital and day clinics – Some limits and conditions apply.
• Covers a range of specialist visits in hospital – Some limits and conditions apply.
• Ambulance Emergency cover.
The Extended Plan:
• Covers hospital and day clinics – Some limits and conditions apply.
• Covers a range of specialist visits in hospital – Some limits and conditions apply.
• Ambulance Emergency cover.
• Covers a range of day-to-day medical expenses.
Essential Health Plan:
• Covers hospital and day clinics, Pre-Authorisation is required. – Limits apply.
• Covers a range of specialist visits in hospital – Hospital limits apply.
• Ambulance Emergency services and some day-to-day expenses covered from Authorised
Service Providers ONLY.
