SA Eagle’s history can be traced back to 1917 when Edward Mountain founded
Eagle Star in the UK. Up until 1937 Eagle Star worked through the Bullen Brothers
in South Africa and then opened its own office in Cape Town. The company later opened
offices in both Johannesburg and Durban.
Following a merger with African Guarantee & Indemnity and SA Fire & Accident in
1965, Eagle Star ceased to operate and a new company SA Eagle was established. SA
Eagle was listed on the JSE in 1968 and operated as a composite insurance company.
In 1972 the company sold its life division and operated only in the short-term insurance
sector. SA Eagle was active in the domestic and commercial short-term markets and
at one stage was the 3rd largest short term insurance company in South Africa. The
company had branches throughout South Africa and in neighbouring countries like
Zimbabwe and Botswana.
In 2007 SA Eagle insurance company adopted the Zurich brand and is now known as
Zurich in South Africa. The Zurich Financial Services Group owns a 73.6 percent
share in the company.
