TeleMed was established in 1922 and operated as a closed medical scheme up
until 1995. It was initially tasked with providing employees in the Telecommunications
and Post sectors with medical aid and related services.
TeleMed has been active as an open scheme for over ten years and currently has more
than 27,000 members. The scheme is self administered and draws most of its members
from Eskom, Telkom and a significant number of private members. In 2006 it was rated
as the 4th best scheme in SA by the TWIG Report.
TeleMed has five options available:
TeleMed Bronze
This is an entry level benefit option aimed at lower income earners.
TeleMed Silver
This option is suited for young single people who are starting their careers.
TeleMed Gold
This option offers unlimited hospitalisation as well as cover for GPs and chronic
medication.
TeleMed Gold Select
This is a comprehensive plan which offers access to a wide range of medical providers.
TeleMed Platinum
Platinum is the premium plan offered by TeleMed. It provides the greatest range
of medical services.
