Unity Insurance was founded in November, 2004 with the aim of creating a
company that would mirror its external target market namely newly empowered black
South Africans. Unity aims to create a working environment that will attract and
retain skilled people from all sectors of South African society and be representative
of it. Unity Insurance has stated that it intends developing Black-empowered insurance
products mainly for the lower end of the market.
The company is 49.9 percent Black-owned or owned by companies that represent the
interests of Black clients. Some of these shareholders include: Assupol Life, Amalgum
Investment Twenty, MBF Investments, Embomini Holdings, Mpande Investment Holdings
and Motse Capital. Unity Insurance states that it is following a BEE model that
necessitates genuine contributions from all shareholders and that they participate
in a meaningful way in the company.
Telesure Investment Holdings owns the remaining 50.1 percent and provides over twenty
years of experience in the South African insurance industry.
