Zurich in South Africa, usually abbreviated to just 'Zurich', is a short-term
insurance company based in Johannesburg and is listed on the JSE. Zurich in South
Africa falls under the international Zurich Group which has its headquarters in
Zurich, Switzerland. The Zurich Group focuses mainly on short-term and life insurance
and was founded in 1872. Today it has offices and subsidiary companies in over 170
countries and employs over 58,000 people.
Zurich's history in South Africa started in 1917 when Eagle Star was established
following a merger between the British Dominions Marine Insurance Company and the
Eagle and the Star Life. Eagle Star remained largely unchanged until 1965 when it
merged with African Guarantee & Indemnity and SA Fire & Accident to form a new company
called SA Eagle. In 2007 SA Eagle adopted the internationally recognised Zurich
brand and is now know as Zurich in South Africa.
Zurich Insurance's South African operation is owned largely by Zurich Financial
Services with a 73.6% share. Another 10% was sold to Royal Bafokeng Finance via
a BEE deal and the remainder is owned by a number of smaller shareholders. Zurich
Insurance employs about 1,000 people in South Africa and even has subsidiaries in
Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Zurich offers individual customers a variety of insurance products ranging from
the more common car, home and accident insurance options through to tailored products.
